Will ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Season 13 queens sashay in wigs, heels — and masks?

The primped and polished queens of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” will ring in the New Year without one timely fashion accessory: face masks.

Season 13 of the reality competition — which will premiere at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 1, 2021, on VH1 — filmed in LA last summer as the world grappled with a new reality of coronavirus lockdowns and social distancing, not mention interruptions of many movie and TV productions. And while producer World of Wonder worked with all applicable unions to approve plans and followed local, state and federal COVID-19 requirements to ensure the safety of all involved in the upcoming 16-episode season, don’t expect the queens to lip-sync while wearing masks.

In September, Variety reported that all crew members wore masks — and got tested for COVID-19 at least once a week — and all talent was tested three times a week during filming.

“Competing safely and fiercely, our 13 queens proved that it takes more than a global pandemic to keep a good queen down,” said executive producer and five-time Emmy-winning host RuPaul, who “disengaged” from social media in August due to the “overwhelming” times. (He returned to Twitter and Instagram in early October.)

A Las Vegas behind-the-scenes franchise spinoff, “RuPaul’s Drag Race: Vegas Revue,” had to cut filming short in Sin City last March due to the coronavirus.

The new challengers — including four New Yorkers — will compete against each other in a series of challenges for a cash prize of $100,000 and the title of “America’s Next Drag Superstar.”
