Facebook to lift its ban on political advertising

The move reopens the door to ads on Facebook by political campaigns as well as issue advertisers. It follows what Facebook said was “a lot of feedback” on its approach to political advertising. The company also signaled that there could be “changes” to its policies. “We’ve heard a lot of feedback about this and learned more about political and electoral ads during this election cycle,” Facebook said in an update to a previous blog post on Wednesday. “As a result, we plan to use the coming months to take a closer look at how these ads work on our service to see where further changes may be merited.” Google (GOOGL) also lifted its similar ban on political advertising last week.

Cuomo says he ‘never touched anyone inappropriately’ and rejects calls to resign

Cuomo, speaking at a press conference in Albany, urged New Yorkers to wait for an attorney general’s inquiry into the allegations to proceed before forming an opinion about the matter. “I never touched anyone inappropriately. I never touched anyone inappropriately. I never knew at the time that I was making anyone feel uncomfortable. I never knew at the time I was making anyone feel uncomfortable,” he said. Cuomo started his briefing speaking about Covid-19 numbers in the state and did not address the allegations until the end of the briefing. “I want New Yorkers to hear from me directly on this. First, I fully support a woman’s right to come forward. And I think it should be encouraged in every

Japanese billionaire invites 8 people to join SpaceX mission around the Moon

Maezawa also said that he’s decided to expand his definition of an “artist,” which he initially defined as singers, dancers, painters and other traditional creative fields. Now, he’s open to including people from all walks of life as long as they view themselves as artists, Maezawa said in a video announcement Tuesday. Maezawa’s invitation to the public to join his Starship mission comes as another billionaire, Shift4 payment platform CEO Jared Isaacman, is searching for a member of the public to join him on a trip to orbit aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft. That mission is slated for later this year and is aimed at raising money for St. Jude Children’s Hospital. The website for “Dear Moon,” Maezawa’s name

The flight attendant who fell in love on an airplane

(CNN) — In September 1970 Jocelyne Nowaski was working as chief flight attendant on a Pan American World Airways flight from Paris to New York when her life changed forever. In her two years at Pan Am the 23-year-old had made friends across the globe, served celebrities including Beatle Ringo Starr and featured with her coworkers in the pages of Paris Match magazine. Pan Am layovers were spent exploring Morocco, on safaris in Nairobi, galloping on horseback on the beaches of Barbados, swimming in Liberia, and browsing the jewelry stalls of Beirut. As she recalls it, her career happened almost by accident. Jocelyne had majored in biology at New York City’s College of Mount St. Vincent, intending to become a

Biden still working through Tanden replacement options as Hill Democrats push Young

With Tanden’s nomination on the ropes for more than a week, White House officials have been quietly working through potential replacement options, ranging from Young to Gene Sperling, the former Clinton and Obama administration economic official, and Ann O’Leary, a former top adviser to Hillary Clinton. But that process still isn’t near a conclusion. A small handful of other names are also currently being discussed by White House aides, the officials said. But while no decision has been made, Biden plans to move quickly on a replacement. For congressional Democrats, that leaves only one candidate as the top choice: Young, who is Biden’s nominee to serve as deputy director at the agency. While barely known outside of the US Capitol,

Susan Collins says she will vote to confirm Deb Haaland for interior secretary

“After examining Representative Deb Haaland’s qualifications, reviewing her hearing before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, and meeting with her personally, I will vote to confirm her to be the Secretary of the Department of the Interior,” Collins said in a statement. Collins’ backing, after Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin announced last week he would also vote to confirm, gives Haaland a greater likelihood at being approved by the Senate, which has a 50-50 partisan split. Collins is the first Republican senator to announce her support for Haaland to lead the Interior Department. In her announcement, Collins said she appreciated Haaland’s “willingness to support issues” important to Maine and her “deep knowledge of tribal issues.” She also pointed to Haaland’s

Washington Post: Top Pentagon official says approval for National Guard to Capitol riot was ‘sprint speed’

“If the forces … were ready to go as part of the preparatory stuff, then I’d say, OK, that’s a fair assessment. But this is the D.C. National Guard that went from a cold start, and they had troops there in two and a half, three hours,” Milley told reporters on Monday in his first public remarks about the Pentagon’s response to the attack, according to the newspaper. “They reacted faster than our most elite forces from a cold start.” The newspaper also reported that Defense officials approved the request to send National Guard members to the US Capitol in nearly an hour, in which Milley said was “super fast” and “like sprint speed” for the Pentagon. CNN reached out

Right-wing misinformation on Facebook is more engaging than its left-wing counterpart, research finds

According to the research, accounts rated by outside media watchdogs as being far-right and frequent spreaders of misinformation are far more likely to generate likes, shares and other forms of engagement on their respective Facebook pages than right-wing sources of reliable information — which in turn are better at generating engagement than left-wing sources of misinformation. The results provide evidence that right-wing sources of misinformation are some of the most engaging content creators on Facebook, said Laura Edelson, a researcher at NYU’s Cybersecurity for Democracy initiative. “My takeaway is that, one way or another, far-right misinformation sources are able to engage on Facebook with their audiences much, much more than any other category,” Edelson said. “That’s probably pretty dangerous on

TikTok empowered these plus-sized women, then took down some of their posts. They still don’t know why

But in early December, Bader, who now has more than 800,000 followers, tried on a too-small pair of brown leather pants from Zara, and viewers caught a glimpse of her partially naked butt. TikTok quickly deleted the video, citing its policy against “adult nudity.” It was upsetting to Bader given that her video, which was meant to promote body positivity, was taken down while videos from other TikTok users that appear sexually suggestive remain on the app. “That to me makes no sense,” she said. Julia Kondratink, a 29-year-old biracial blogger who describes herself as “mid-sized,” had a similarly unexpected takedown on the platform in December. TikTok deleted a video featuring her wearing blue lingerie due to “adult nudity.” “I
